The Economics of Gender is an introductory course that examines how gender affects economic outcomes. At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand the difference between “sex” and “gender," and why this distinction is important.
- Identify ways in which the economy is gendered, and how this affects economic outcomes.
- Utilize and analyze gender data.
- Examine the effectiveness of public policies to address gender disparities.
Tentative Modules:
- Introduction to gender and economics – introduction to feminist economics, masculinities and femininities, history of gender roles, global gender trends
- Gender and labor markets – gender differences in labor force participation, wages, and education levels
- Gender in the family and household – the unpaid economy, gendered division of labor, marriage, care work
- Gender and globalization and development – globalization, poverty, international development
- Policies – government policies, firm initiatives
