The Economics of Gender


The Economics of Gender is an introductory course that examines how gender affects economic outcomes. At the end of this course, students will be able to: 
  1. Understand the difference between “sex” and “gender," and why this distinction is important.  
  2. Identify ways in which the economy is gendered, and how this affects economic outcomes. 
  3. Utilize and analyze gender data. 
  4. Examine the effectiveness of public policies to address gender disparities. 
Tentative Modules: 
  1. Introduction to gender and economics – introduction to feminist economics, masculinities and femininities, history of gender roles, global gender trends 
  2. Gender and labor markets – gender differences in labor force participation, wages, and education levels
  3. Gender in the family and household – the unpaid economy, gendered division of labor, marriage, care work 
  4. Gender and globalization and development – globalization, poverty, international development 
  5. Policies – government policies, firm initiatives
